November 15, 2024 /SemiMedia/ — LG and AI chipmaker Tenstorrent have announced an expanded partnership to jointly develop AI system-on-chip (SoC) solutions targeting smart home devices, video processing, and more. The collaboration aims to advance LG’s concept of “Affectionate Intelligence,” integrating AI into home appliances, smart home solutions, mobile, and commercial applications.
Tenstorrent CEO Jim Keller and LG CEO William Cho recently met at the LG Twin Towers in Seoul, where senior executives from both companies discussed plans for broader collaboration. As part of this effort, Tenstorrent will leverage its expertise in RISC-V architecture and chiplet design to develop the next generation of AI processors. Keller highlighted that future “Affectionate Intelligence” SoCs will incorporate “AI and RISC-V technology” to enhance performance and efficiency.
LG has established a dedicated SoC R&D center focused on system semiconductor design, specializing in chiplet-based SoC architecture and validation. The center has already launched several SoC products, including the DQ-C chip for AI appliances and the Alpha 11 AI processor for OLED TVs. LG’s technological capabilities will support the collaborative chip design efforts with Tenstorrent.
Tenstorrent’s strategy aligns with its pursuit of design wins in markets underserved by Nvidia’s offerings, viewing this partnership with LG as a key step toward that goal. Although Tenstorrent is capable of designing high-performance RISC-V CPUs and Wormhole AI accelerators, this collaboration is expected to help the company tap into lucrative high-demand segments of the consumer electronics market.
The expanded partnership between LG and Tenstorrent aims to strengthen their foothold in the AI chip sector, providing advanced AI solutions for smart home devices and consumer electronics.
