Maxim announced the launch of MAX-HEALTH-BAND to help designers extract vital signs and raw data from wearable designs, and obtain clinical-grade ECG and heart rate monitoring data via MAX-ECG-MONITOR. The MAX-HEALTH-BAND is a heart rate and motion monitoring wristband that uses an optimized MAX86140 optical pulse oximeter/heart rate sensor, wearable power management scheme, and Maxim's motion compensation algorithm. The MAX-ECG-MONITOR uses the MAX30003 ultra-low power, clinical-grade analog front end (AFE) that monitors ECG and heart rate signals. The platform offers two sizes - wet pad (for clinical use) and chest strap (fitness application).
Many health and fitness wearable device developers need to spend a lot of effort to develop high-quality optical heart rate detection solutions. The main challenge is the complexity of optical detection and motion compensation algorithms. These factors seriously hinder the design process. Engineers must consider goals such as comfort, battery life, and high-precision measurements. The MAX-HEALTH-BAND and MAX-ECG-MONITOR evaluation and development platforms address these design challenges.
MAX-HEALTH-BAND
the MAX-HEALTH-BAND heart-rate and activity tracker demonstrates system-level performance at the IC level for evaluating AFEs and power management ICs (PMICs), saving up to 6 months of development time and simplifying the modeling and prototyping process. The platform includes a motion compensation algorithm that extracts data required for health and fitness testing based on PPG signals. In addition, the platform can output the result of the algorithm calculation to the mobile phone via Bluetooth; the raw data of the health sensor can also be transmitted to the smart phone app for calculation using the customer's algorithm. Platform-embedded algorithms can include heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), step values, and exercise data. To improve accuracy, heart rate and motion monitors also collect heartbeat-related physiological data. Maxim IC power consumption in MAX-HEALTH-BAND is reduced by more than half compared to competitor’s solutions, and up to 7 days of work time can be maintained with each charge. The IC size is also reduced by approximately one-third, providing users with a compact, comfortable form factor.
MAX-ECG-MONITOR
The MAX-ECG-MONITOR Evaluation and Development Platform uses the MAX30003 clinical-grade AFE to analyze data and accurately track ECG and heart rate signals to provide customers with reliable clinical and fitness data. The platform also allows developers to run their own algorithms to obtain ECG fitness or medical information. As part of the Movesense ecosystem, MAX-ECG-MONITOR runs open application programming interfaces (APIs) to develop unique device apps for various ECG-based applications, displaying heart rate signals during rest or strenuous exercise.
