January 27, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — Infineon Technologies AG announced the formation of a new business unit designed to accelerate the company's growth in the sensor sector. The new unit will combine the existing Sensor and Radio Frequency (RF) businesses into one focused organization. Named SURF (Sensor Units & Radio Frequency), this new business unit will be part of the Power & Sensor Systems (PSS) division and will include the former Automotive and Multi-market Sense & Control operations.
By merging its sensor and RF expertise, Infineon aims to enhance its market competitiveness and streamline its go-to-market strategy. This integration will leverage synergies in cost and research and development, driving faster innovation and delivering greater value to customers. The strategic move is designed to tap into the significant growth potential of the sensor and RF markets, which are expected to exceed $20 billion by 2027. The new business unit officially launched on January 1, 2025.
“With this new unit, we are addressing the increasing demand for sensors and RF solutions driven by trends such as green energy, clean and safe mobility, and smart, secure IoT,” said Dr. Thomas Schafbauer, Head of the SURF business unit at Infineon. “This dedicated focus on sensors and RF allows us to expand our sales activities and combine our innovation capabilities, offering even more differentiated system solutions for our automotive, consumer, and industrial customers.”
As devices become more intelligent and autonomous, sensor semiconductors are playing an increasingly vital role in connecting the physical and digital worlds. Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and ambient sensors enable context-aware devices, while Infineon’s MEMS-based microphones are already integral to smartphones, wearables, and smart speakers, facilitating AI-driven voice solutions for enhanced user experiences. Additionally, Infineon’s radar technology is critical for reliable object recognition, such as in autonomous driving, and its magnetic sensors are crucial in electric vehicles and industrial automation, ensuring precise motion control. In energy applications, Infineon’s current sensors help improve energy efficiency in power inverters and batteries.
