April 28, 2025 /SemiMedia/ — STMicroelectronics has acquired Deeplite, a Toronto-based startup specializing in edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Deeplite CEO Nick Romano announced the news on LinkedIn, though the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition centers around Deeplite's expertise in AI model optimization, quantization, and compression. Deeplite's solutions make it easier to run AI applications on chips in devices like smartphones and robots, as opposed to relying on cloud-based data centers. With this acquisition, STMicroelectronics plans to integrate Deeplite’s advanced software with its own cutting-edge MCUs and NPUs, creating one of the most advanced edge AI platforms in the world.
Deeplite's technology will accelerate the deployment of NPUs, optimize AI processors, and shorten time-to-market for AI applications. This acquisition aligns well with STMicroelectronics’ semiconductor business, which focuses on designing and manufacturing chips for various customers, particularly those in the semiconductor sector, enhancing their AI capabilities.
Deeplite's customer base, primarily composed of semiconductor companies, complements STMicroelectronics' business strategy. The acquisition strengthens both companies' competitive edge in the fast-growing edge computing market.
Deeplite was founded in 2017 as a project incubated by TandemLaunch and became an independent technology company in 2019. According to PitchBook, Deeplite had raised $6.47 million in funding, with support from Canadian investors such as BDC Capital, Desjardins Capital, and Somel Ventures.
