Recently, IC Insights released the latest MEMS sensor report. According to the report, MEMS sensors are expected to account for 73% of the $9.3 billion semiconductor sensor market in 2018.
It is estimated that during the period of 2017-2022, MEMS sensor and actuator market revenue is expected to increase to US$17.8 billion in 2022 with a compound annual growth rate of 9.2%. Shipments are expected to reach 20.2 billion in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate of 11.4%.
The biggest market change in the next five years is that the ASP (average selling price) of MEMS devices will tend to be stable during the forecast period, which is significantly different from the sharp decline in MEMS device ASP over the past 10 years.
Between 2017 and 2022, the compound annual growth rate of ASP for MEMS sensors and actuators is expected to be -2.0%, which is -4.7% for the period 2012-2017, and this figure was -13.6% during 2007-2012.
The ASP for MEMS sensors and actuators in 2017 was $0.97, and is expected to fall to $0.88 by 2022, compared to $2.57 and $1.24 in 2007 and 2012, respectively.
MEMS devices are widely used in recent "autonomous, intelligent automation applications" (such as IoT interconnect devices and various applications that include artificial intelligence), which will help MEMS devices avoid the ASP decline which similar to the past 10 years. For many applications, MEMS devices are becoming more and more critical, which will help them avoid excessive pricing pressure on the market.
